Shashwat Rai

Shashwat graduated from Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), with honours, in 2016. He then went on to work as Corporate Counsel for Vedanta Ltd., and, dealt with a variety of commercial arbitrations and regulatory litigations. A notable arbitration matter in which he worked on was a 1000 crore (approx.), liquidated damages claim, in front of a multi-arbitrator tribunal headed by, CJI(retd.) RM Lodha. He also dealt with various environmental and other regulatory compliances, as well as, contract management for the company. Notably, he was also a member of the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) complaints committee, and, conducted a number of training modules for the same.

Thereafter, he went on to earn a Master’s in International Law (Merit) from University College London (UCL). While at UCL, he had the opportunity to study from legal luminaries such as Prof. Phillippe Sands (KC), Prof. Alex Mills, Prof. Kimberley N. Trapp, Prof. Martins Paparinskis, Prof. Danae Azaria. While at UCL, he also had the opportunity to visit various international courts and tribunals at the Hague. There notably, he had the opportunity to meet and interact with Judge (Prof.) James Crawford of ICJ, the leading authority in International Law, and, erstwhile Lauterpacht chair for International Law at Cambridge. He also met with the then President Judge of ICJ, Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf.

Shashwat wrote his thesis on the notable Yukos arbitration awards, under the guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Alex Mills, a leading authority in International Commercial Litigation, and, received praise for the same.
